It is not well known that the research and development of electron tubes in Japan has started early in the world Japan’s first electron tube development was based on the Audion-type triode invented by Lee De Forest in 1907.
The research and development of electron tubes needed to bring together the state-of-the-art technologies at the time, such as the theory of physical properties, material development technologyand vacuum technology, and it was very difficult. The Electronical Laboratory, which had been researching the practical application of the Audion-type triode, succeeded in the practical application of the Audion-type triode in 1916. Tokyo Electric Co., Ltd. (currently Toshiba Co.) In June 1917, the Tokyo Electric Co. succeeded in commercializing the Audion type triode.
The success of the practical application of the Audion-type triode with Japan’s original technology thus formed the basic technology for the subsequent research and development of electron tubes in Japan. The establishment of this basic technology became the basis for the later development of Japanese electronic technology.
