人間の臓器の機能を代替できる人工腎臓や人工肺には、化学システム工学の技術が詰め込まれています。人間の腎臓は血液のろ過と再吸収を行い血液を浄化しますが、透析中空糸膜をモジュール化した人工腎臓によってその機能を代替できます。この中空糸膜の輸送現象の解明と膜設計指針を明らかにすることに化学システム工学は大きく寄与してきました。また、中空糸膜の紡糸工程にも化学システム工学は多大なる貢献をしてきました。
現在国内だけでも30万人の人々が透析療法によって通常の生活を送ることができます。分離技術は人工腎臓に加えて、肝疾患や炎症性疾患の治療に用いられるアフェレシス治療にも用いられています。

Artificial organs such as artificial kidneys and artificial lungs can replace the functions of human organs. Chemical System Engineering has contributed to these technologies. The human kidney purifies blood by blood filtration and reabsorption, and its function can
be replaced by an artificial kidney with a modularized dialysis hollow fiber membrane. Chemical System Engineering has greatly contributed to clarify the transport phenomenon of this hollow fiber membrane and suggest the guideline of membrane and module design.
In addition, Chemical System Engineering has contributed greatly to the spinning process of hollow fiber membranes. Currently, 300,000 people can live normal daily life with dialysis therapy in Japan alone. The separation technique is also used for apheresis treatment used for treating liver diseases and inflammatory diseases.
