In the 1920s, Dr. Kiyoshi Muto (1903–1989) developed a practical method for structural analysis by which shear forces acting on seismic members such as columns and shear walls under horizontal loading due to earthquakes can be calculated using lateral load distribution coefficient. This method called “Muto’s D-value  method” were adopted into the Calculation Standard for reinforced concrete structures of the Architectural Institute of Japan in 1933.
The panel on display is the presentation board which Dr. Muto used to give his lecture to the Emperor Hirohito(1901–1989) at the Imperial New Year’s Lectures (Kousho Hajime) held at the Imperial Palace on January 1977.
